MRI machines operate at field strengths ranging from 1.5 to 3.0 tesla (T), which is equivalent to 15,000 to 30,000 gauss. Despite the high field strength, the safety of MRI machines is well-established, as the magnetic fields are contained within the machine and the risks are carefully managed.
Another potential source of strong magnetic fields is from industrial applications, such as those found in steel mills and transformers. Workers in these environments may be exposed to magnetic fields that exceed the safe limit, but they are typically equipped with safety measures to protect them from harm.
So, can a strong magnetic field kill you? The answer is yes, but only under extreme circumstances. The vast majority of magnetic field exposures in everyday life are at levels that are considered safe. However, it is crucial to continue researching the effects of magnetic fields on human health and to implement appropriate safety measures to protect those working in high-risk environments.
